The Food and Drug Administration approved Pfizer Inc.'s impotence pill, Viagra, on Monday, setting a record for a drug to be used to treat erectile dysfunction.
The FDA, in its final rulemaking, said it had determined that Pfizer is not a controlled substance under federal law, but a “potentially controlled substance” under state law.
Viagra, the world’s best-selling drug, is approved to treat erectile dysfunction in men by the FDA and the state health board.
The medication has been available since 1998. About 2,500 men have used the drug since 1998, according to a study released by the FDA on Tuesday.
Viagra is the world’s best-selling drug, with a share of $11 billion in sales last year.
The drug has been used to treat erectile dysfunction in men who have not been diagnosed with the disease.
